The Easiest Tip That Will Transform Your Communication

Jul 09, 2025

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve watched a lot of presentations. And I’ve seen some brilliant points being made. Ideas about growth, team motivation, business performance, and future goals. All carefully thought through and rooted in great communication.

But the message got lost in all of them.

Not because the speaker didn’t know their stuff. Not because they weren’t passionate. But because of one very simple thing:

They didn’t pause.

Let me try and explain.

Let’s say I’m presenting to my team. I want to acknowledge the increased profit this year, but I also need to highlight that we’ll have to work harder next year because some of that profit came from one-offs, not consistent effort.

However, when they go to say it, they rush through it because they want to get to the end, ensure they've said everything they were supposed to, and then move on.

The Power of the Pause

Instead, try taking a breath. Slow it right down. Let each point hang in the air before you move on. It'll make your presentation clear, impactful and easy to follow.

Slowing down. Giving space. Letting each idea land before moving on to the next.

Get Comfortable with Silence

This is your tip for the week, and it’s one of the easiest changes you can make that will have the biggest impact on your communication.

In our presenter training, one of the most powerful exercises we do is this:

We get people to stand in front of a room… and say nothing.

That’s it.

It’s uncomfortable at first. But the magic happens when you realise you don’t have to fill the silence.
You can use it.
You can own it.

Because when you pause:

You give your audience time to absorb what you’re saying
You make your message clearer
You reduce your nerves (seriously, slowing down helps)
You hold the room

So this week, try it. Whether you’re in a team meeting, a 1-2-1, or delivering your big presentation, start using pauses more intentionally. Slow down. Let your point land.

The next few weeks are full of opportunities to communicate meaningfully, to make your team feel seen and supported.

And one well-timed pause can do more for that than a hundred rushed sentences.

See you next week, and remember:

Great communication can change your life. Including the way you talk to yourself.
